The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
