The Gory Cartoon Movie Conclusion That Stays With Audiences
Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked finale of a viscerally violent and highly provocative film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director crafted a grim, somber and often savage world that included several minor , forlorn hints of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to expand the medium further, the director clarified that it was actually a try to express a universal, multicultural message about “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That idea is expressed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , openly based on a popular series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a culture focused on militarism and the defense industry, numerous these creatures are fixated on killing the mythical beasts, because of a sacred text that tells the bears they previously were masters of the woodland, before these creatures forced them out.
Others haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, , prefer to experiment with substances and mate in the forest.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters display sexual organs , definite libidos.
For a particular especially vicious, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war against unicorns transforms into a path to control — and especially to authority above his more tender, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
The character is a bully , an obvious sociopath , and while terror takes over his unit and takes his fellow soldiers individually, he seizes increasingly control on his own behalf, through ever more bloody, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are experiencing their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, destructive monster in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more serious and melancholic film. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the more whimsical films by an iconic animator, that discover a naughty glee in allowing cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it becomes closer to a more grim movie from the same creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable connection to genuine tragedy of battle.
Ultimately, it is an outright theatrical horror carnage.
The fear that makes the film a Halloween-friendly watch starts well before than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who want to see something they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story that pulls no restraint.
Watch it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will crawl under your skin and stay with you.
