The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
