New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
