The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Matteo's Surprising Presence
At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
