Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years Old
Global audiences mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and positive temperament earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.
In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
