Israelis commemorate second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Israelis have gathered across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- Future administration of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"Once the evening comes, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"We are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area said additional dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
