Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their release of a controversial video.

The Content That Sparked the Debate

The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in military or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all made an oath to defend and support this national charter," the officials declared in the short video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Furious Reaction

The clip seemed to provoke a angry reply from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats released a unified statement condemning the statements.

"Violent politics has no place in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.

Officials' Firm Answer

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a response.

"We identify as veterans and security experts who care for this country and made an oath to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the national charter and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "Every American must unite and condemn the former president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for moral clarity."

Further Political Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of public representatives."

He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and decide all that."

White House Response

During a administration briefing on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."

She said: "The sanctity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can cause chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
