Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
