Administration Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.
While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.
A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.
Consequences for Employees
These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
