A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book lodging upon arrival, however when I arrived, a large conference was happening and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in an establishment operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more folks who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused as a woman saw me loitering in the city and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my situation and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.

I never did attending ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity tenfold. The world needs more people who show such kindness.
